In early January 1944, Celnikier was sent from Stutthof to Birkenau (Auschwitz II). He recalled: "The smoke of burning bodies was omnipresent, the bodies of the murdered also". This atmosphere and impression of unprecedented horror is conveyed by a multi-faceted scene with a jumble of living and dead bodies shrouded in ominous smoke. | AT
