The bag

Lechtman, Tonia (1918-1996)

The bag is made of cotton denim in green colour. It consists of four fields and a separate bottom. Each of the fields has been decorated with embroidery in the form of a floral application (field flowers and ears). The edges or connections of the fields are framed with beige thread (Zakopane embroidery). At the bottom, in the central field, the initial "W" is visible. The initial is surrounded by a wreath of twigs and flowers. All the appliqués were made using the laid embroidery technique with beige threads. The object has a lining made of several fragments of fabric. Two pockets were sewn on the lining. On one of them, with blue thread, was embroidered the inscription "Weroczka" and a decorative border. The inscription was made with the use of needlepoint technique, the trails with Zakopane embroidery. The pocket is closed with a metal button and a loop. The second pocket is also decorated with bordure made with Zakopane embroidery technique using the same thread. It is not fastened. Between the pockets there is a loop earflap. At the top of the bag there is a string with a hook and loop closure.

The initial "W" and the diminutive name 'Weroczka' probably refer to Tonia Lechtman's daughter, Wera.
