Ball

Bok, Teodor (1947-2007)

Some of Teodor Bok’s sculptures on the one hand, emanate with unbelievable delicacy, on the other – with strength, without loosing the form’s subtlety. That is also characteristic for the seemingly simple Kula [Ball] constructed with the intersecting stripes of wood, and a small ball attached to its surface. The Ball is held tightly between two wooden bars – just like between two fingers. The upper one resembles as if a moving stick – its line soft and wavy – composed of three parts: a ``torso``, a ``neck`` and a ``head`` joined by screws suggesting its mobility. To the culminating ``head`` ``ears`` are attached on the sides. They are made of small, irregular, wooden pieces; another two pieces of wood – little sticks – were placed between them; two, small balls (diameter of about 1 centimetre) were nailed to the ``ears``.

The sculpture forces the viewers to ask themselves a question about the symbolic meaning of a huge, gold-plated ball and small balls around it – earth, people, space? As in many of Bok’s works, besides precision in execution we can find here also a bit of poetic grotesque, humour and beauty.
