Belz Great Synagogue, Jerusalem

Traczewska, Agnieszka (1969-)

The photograph was taken during a wedding ceremony at the Great Synagogue of the Bełz Hasidim in Jerusalem. The two elderly women visible in the photo are in the ezrat nashim (Yiddish: weibershul), a room inside the synagogue intended for women only. The genesis of the room comes from the description of the Jerusalem Temple, which was to have one courtyard dedicated to women only. The ezrat nashim of the Great Synagogue of the Hasidic Jews of Bełz is separated from the rest of the space by a mechitza - a partition, visible on the right side of the photograph. In this case, the mechitza takes the form of an openwork screen that allows one to listen to the ongoing ceremonies, sermons or prayers.

Another photograph from this ceremony: MPOLIN-M1543.
