Bolesław Roja

Gottlieb, Leopold (1879-1934)

Colonel Boleslaw Jerzy Roja (1876-1940), commander of the Legionary "Czwartak" (the Fourth Infantry Regiment) (i.e. the 4th Infantry Regiment), is shown at his desk in his headquarters in the Roja Estate near Optowa. Behind him in the background – a map; in front of him – a pile of books. The spatial positioning of significant props in relation to the colonel may suggest a symbolic narrative of the portrait: from war theory (books), to the analysis of the situation at the front and the implementation of conclusions into a war deed in a concrete time and place (map). Roja was known for his strong personality, unusual courage, spontaneity bordering on unpredictability, and at the same time numerous military talents. The lithographic image of the colonel, included in the Legion's portfolio, with an exceptionally developed symbolic narrative, is one of the most outstanding portraits in Gottlieb's entire artistic output. | AT
