The BOS pin

It is part of the collection

The pin of the Bureau of the Reconstruction of the Capital City (BOS), an institution established in 1945 by a decree of the National Council for the reconstruction of Warsaw destroyed during World War II, belonging to Marian Rzędowskio. Roman Piotrowski was appointed head of the BOS, with Józef Sigalin (see note to his paperwork *) and Witold Plapis as his deputies. Initially, the Bureau's most important task was to secure and inventory the surviving relics of the town's buildings. Then work began on the reconstruction of the almost completely ruined Warsaw. The largest projects carried out by BOS included the construction of the W-Z (East-West) route, which connected the districts of the capital located on both sides of the Vistula River. The office was closed down in 1951.

The architect Marian Rzędowski appeared at the headquarters of PKWN (Polish Committee of National Liberation) in Lublin as early as 19 January 1945. When he offered the Committee's representatives his knowledge and experience, he was immediately assigned from Lublin to rebuild Warsaw. As early as January 1945, Rzędowksi was appointed Head of the Realisation Department at the Warsaw Rebuilding Organisation Bureau, and later Head of the Planning Department at BOS.

The pin is made of metal in the shape of a rectangular shield. On the surface of the shield there is a representation of a bird (eagle) and a three-letter acronym. The lower edge of the shield is slightly pointed (in the middle). All edges have been thickened at the edges, creating a frame for the representation, which is located in the central part and occupies practically the entire surface of the shield. The representation is convex on the obverse and apparently concave on the reverse. The bird embossed on the shield has spread wings and widely spread legs between which there is a straight tail. The head of the bird is turned to the left (shown in profile). Its beak is open, its tongue is protruding, its claws are open. The acronym "BOS" ( Biuro Odbudowy Stolicy). On the back, in the middle, a metal pin has been attached.
