Butter dish

Butter dish with overlapping lid, circular in shape (in top view), with inscription on lid: “Zur | Silberhochzeit | 25”. It probably dates from the period of the factory's operation as Porzellanfabrik Königszelt AG (Ref. Koenigszelt Silesia, 1920s).

This butter dish was kept by Aniela Pruska née Ćwikło, who before 1939 worked in Staszów as a domestic worker for the Wolman and Goldfarb families. She handed it over to Elżbieta Kwapisz, enigmatically suggesting that it should be handled in a particular way. Before donating the object to the POLIN Museum, Kwapisz attempted to reconstruct the history of this item and, among other things, made contact with Jack Goldfarb, who at the time exhibited a memorial matzeva in Staszów to his family killed in the Holocaust (see https://sztetl.org.pl/pl/miejscowosci/s/658-staszow/120-aktualnosci/50416-modlitwa-przy-pamiatkowej-macewie, accessed 26.12.2023; see also https://www.jackgoldfarbwriter.com/poland/, accessed 26.12.2023). The butter dish, Goldfarb stated, probably just belonged to his family, as the Wolmans were relatively poor and could not have owned such an item.

Judging from the inscription, the object must have been a gift for a 25th wedding anniversary.
