Chasydka modląca się przy grobie cadyka w Safed (Tzvat)

The photograph was taken in Israel in the town of Safed (otherwise known as Cfat, Sefat or Zefat) at the tomb of a tzaddik. Visiting the burial sites of tzaddikim is very important to Hasidim - they believe that tzaddikim have the ability to mediate between people and God even after death, so praying at the grave of a tzaddik is also effective. Safed, where the tomb is located, is recognised as one of Judaism's four holy cities, along with Jerusalem, Hebron and Tiberias. It is located in the Northern District of Israel and is the country's highest city, being located at an altitude of approximately 850 m above sea level, in Upper Galilee. All of these cities were the most important centres of Jewish life after the Ottoman conquest of Palestine in 1517, but Safed took on a unique significance because of its centre of mysticism organised around the Kabbalah movement (Hebrew: qabbalah, Yiddish: kabole, meaning receiving, acceptance, transmission) – a strand of Judaism derived from the ideas of maase be-reshit (work of the beginning, work of creation) and maase merkabah (work of the chariot, celestial mysteries).
