Chasydki, Me’a Sze’arim, Jerozolima

Photograph showing three women, residents of the Mea Shearim neighbourhood in Jerusalem, home to a large Hasidic community. Hasidim choose to seclude themselves in neighbourhoods of larger cities or small satellite towns in order to live according to their principles and minimise the influence of undesirable customs, behaviours or fashions that stand in opposition to their professed values. Hasidic communities build their own synagogues, schools or clinics and open shops to buy kosher food, so they live as much life in their own space as possible. Examples include the Outremont neighbourhood in Montreal, Boro Park in New York, Stamford Hill in London or towns such as Bnei Brak near Tel Aviv or Beit Shemesh near Jerusalem.
