Chicory cob

There are two chicory cobs in the collection of the Regional Museum in Pińczów, both in very poor condition. The "Łabędź" chicory factory was located in Działoszyce in the Kielce Province. The initiator of the establishment of this Jewish agricultural colony was Eliasz Moszkowski. Eight Jewish colonists settled on the land he leased. The product of this factory won a silver medal in 1894.

Chicory was a sought-after product in the pre-war period. Compressed chicory tablets were added to grain coffee to enhance its flavour. It is known from the accounts of older people that it was very popular in the town and the surrounding region. It was served in coffee in every home, both Jewish and Christian.

The soil conditions in the area of Pińczów were favourable for the plant so it was readily cultivated.
