Company envelope of the D. Kurzmann Trading and Commissioning House

Blank envelope with an imprint “D. KURZMANN, KRAKÓW”.

In the upper right corner is a 25 gr postal stamp, dated “12XII35”. The details of the adressee written in black pen: “W.Pani | Trudel [?] Fujna [Figna?] | Warszawa | ul. Hoża No 39. | u p. Wr. Szemion”.

The company, as established by Grzegorz Siwor (Enoszijut. Opowieść o Dawidzie Kurzmannie, Kraków 2014, p. 71), was owned by Dancze Kurzmann, the wife of Dawid Kurzmann, who actually ran the business. By the time this envelope was sent to the addressee (about whom we have no information), it was already a company with the whole family as shareholders (in 1933): David and the three Kurzmann children - Hinda Frida, Baruchm and Izrael.

Dawid Kurzmann is remembered today for his attitude during the Holocaust, when he voluntarily went to his death together with the rest of the staff and the pupils of the Orphanage from the Kraków ghetto. The envelope is an ephemeral material, a memento of his family's thriving pre-war commercial enterprise.

We do not know the history of the envelope - it was donated by the collector Bogusław Gołębiowski, who acquired it from accidental owners.
