The Crown of Torah (keter Torah)

One of the external ornaments of the Torah scroll is the crown (Hebrew: keter Torah). The crown held in the collections of the Tykocin Museum was likely made in Poland at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is made of silver and consists of six walls decorated with floral ornamentation. Small rosettes in the shape of a blooming flower with a small attached bell serve as the connecting elements between the walls of the crown. A smaller crown is placed at the upper junction. At the top, the crown is topped by with a cast eagle with spread wings. The image of an eagle is often found in synagogue spaces due to its symbolism. In the Chapters of the Fathers (Hebrew: Pirkei Avot) 5:20, for example, we find the saying: "Be strong as a tiger, and swift as an eagle, and fleet as a gazelle, and brave as a lion, to do the will of your Father who is in heaven."
