The design of theatre scenography – the interior: a basement

Pacanowski, Bolesław (1901-1977)

The theatre scenography design framed by a box-like stage, with a black frame-curtain surrounding it on three sides, with a view of a basement/residential cellar (top). The sketch is done in pen and black ink, coloured in watercolour, in shades of brown. It is a view of a cellar with a barrel vault, a small window, a tiled cooker with a smoke pipe pierced through the ceiling. It is the almost empty interior of the wretched: with a patched screen, folding wooden beds on which there is not even bedding. The wooden doors with iron hinges are the most solid.
