The design of theatre scenography – the interior: a basement

Pacanowski, Bolesław (1901-1977)

This is another preparatory pencil sketch with a view of the basement interior with the part of the MPOLIN-M-M1156 project in which Bolesław Pacanowski tried to outline the basement space. A staircase, located in the left corner of the stage, leads to the interior of a basement with a brick vault, which is partly below ground level. Right next to the stairs, on the left, there is a low stool with a pelvis and a water container attached to the wall, with a quart hanging on the wall. Further on is a large tiled cooker with a baking oven. In the foreground in the middle stands a wooden table with three wooden chairs beside it; an oil lamp hangs over the table. Against the wall on the left, in a raised recess, there is a single iron bed. There are two single folding beds with bedclothes between them, a sideboard against the side wall, a cradle and a stool against the screen wall, and a small folding bed with a pillow in the middle. Two large, single candlesticks are placed on the top of the sideboard covered with a napkin; an oil lamp hangs high on the sideboard wall.
