The design of theatre scenography – an interior of the forge

Pacanowski, Bolesław (1901-1977)

Forges were to be found in every town, city and village. There you could shoe a horse, mend a wheel or forge knives and pots, nails and hooks. In Poland, forges were often owned or leased by Jews. In this theatrical set design, we see only a fragment of a room with a stump and an anvil on which a hammer lies. On the wall in the depths of the forge hang the blacksmith's tools, from the left: tongs, two hammers and larger tongs. A blacksmith's bellows is used to maintain the temperature of the fire, which in the forge can reach 1300°C. The hearth in Pacanowski's design is not open, as is usually the case in forges, but it is an ordinary tiled cooker. See also another version of this stage design, MPOLIN-M1159.
