The design of theatre scenography – the interior of a spinning mill

Pacanowski, Bolesław (1901-1977)

The theatre scenography design depicting the interior of a spinning mill. It is not a huge spinning mill in a factory in Łódź, rather a workshop. In the clearance in the depth of the stage one can see four wooden spinning machines, set in pairs on both sides of the passage, with red and green yarn on the reels. They process the fibre into yarn, which is an intermediate product for the production of fabrics, knitwear, lace, rope, thread, etc. Spinning can be done manually – on an angle, spindle or reel, or industrially – mechanically. In this case, we see how the machines perform the final stage of spinning, i.e. winding the yarn onto typical conical cross windings. "That is to eliminate errors that occur during the spinning process. During the rewinding process, the yarn thread passes through a series of elements that create the right tension or do not allow too thick sections of thread and wrong knots to pass through. At thinner or thicker points during the winding process, the thread breaks and forces the operator to remove the defective section of yarn and tie the ends together with the correct weaving knot. (...) Cross-windings are wound very loosely to facilitate the penetration of the bleaching or dyeing bath. In this form, the yarn undergoes a finishing process, e.g. bleaching or dyeing, or is delivered to a weaving mill, where it undergoes preparatory processes for weaving, i.e. preparation of the warp and weft" (https://www.szkolnictwo.pl/szukaj,Prz%C4%99dzeni, accessed 8.11.2021).
