The design of theatre scenography - a street in the town

Pacanowski, Bolesław (1901-1977)

In the towns of the old Republic of Poland, an inn (also called a guest house) was one of the most important places where locals and visitors met. There one could talk, drink beer or vodka, play cards or spend the night on the road (see the 18th century inn in the "Miasteczko" [The Town] gallery (1648-1772) in the permanent exhibition at the POLIN Museum). A signboard reading "TO THE LAST GROSH" encouraged visitors to enter, but was also a warning against losing all your money. The pencil sketch was probably a preparatory drawing for the subsequent, but already colourful, watercolour scenography projects (see MPOLIN-M1141-MPOLIN-1143).
