The design of theatre scenography – a tavern

Pacanowski, Bolesław (1901-1977)

In this scenography design by Bolesław (Beniamin) Pacanowski for the play Yakenhuz. Ojlem habo, Mensz [Wieczór Szołem Alejchemowski; Sholem Aleichem Evening], directed by Ida Kamińska, is simultaneously shown the front of an inn – with an inscription above the entrance in Cyrillic ``отелъ | теркапиа``, and below it a crossed spoon with a fork – and the interior of a room with a bed and a table. The inn is a one-storey building, with grey plaster falling off, with a sloping roof covered with bright orange tiles. On the ridge is a chimney (?), with a yellow crescent and star. To the right a wall with a small square window. In the upper left corner of the design one can see handwritten inscriptions in pen, Zatwier | dzam | [illegible] | 19 II 5? – most probably the designs were approved by the director of the performance, Ida Kamińska. The premiere took place on 4 March 1950, at the State Jewish Theatre in Łódź.
