Dessert knife

The first of a set of twelve dessert knives manufactured by BUBELA i SKA. The knife is silver in colour and is plated. The blade is oblong with a rounded edge, while the handle is flat and widens downwards. The lower part of the handle is decorated with an art déco geometric motif. The decoration consists of two simple grooves (thinnings) running along both edges of the handle. The end of the handle is bevelled where it has been thinned.

The dessert was the finishing touch to any refined party. The table would be tidied up each time before dessert was served, with new tableware brought in. Dessert cutlery (knives and forks) had the same shape as dinner cutlery but was considerably smaller. They were placed next to dessert plates or on eye-catching special saucers that often took on exceptionally fancy forms. Dessert knives were used to peel fruit, which in wealthy homes were served on extremely decorative etagères or pyramids (legged dishes or complex, several-storey dishes).
