The diary of Zipora Nahir alias Fela Sztecher

Zipora Nahir was born as Fejga (Fela) Sztecher on 8 June 1930 in Hrubieszów, where her family home was located at 42 Narutowicza Street. During the war, she was sent to a labour camp in Budzyń near Kraśnik, and then to the concentration camp at Majdanek. After the Red Army entered Lublin in July 1944, she was sent to the Jewish Orphanage No. 5 in Lublin. In 1950, she left for Israel permanently, where she started a family. Initially, she lived in kibbutz Harel. She left the kibbutz in 1955 and began working as a chemical laboratory technician. She then studied philosophy and sociology. In the 1970s, she worked with the UN. She then worked in a library in Tel Aviv. She retired in 1995.

The presented object is the diary of fifteen-year-old Fela Sztecher, written between 2 July and 5 December 1945, i.e. during the difficult immediate post-war period. It was written in a notebook to which the author added additional pages, often the backs of pre-war Polish and German documents from the occupation period.

An extensive account by witness to history Zipora Nahir about her childhood spent in Hrubieszów, her parents and grandparents, her wartime experiences and her diary-keeping in the Hrubieszów ghetto and in the Jewish orphanage after the war has been posted on the Pracownia Historii Mówionej tab at https://teatrnn.pl/historiamowiona/swiadkowie/zipora-nahir/.
