Diatłowicki, Jerzy

Jerzy Diatlowicki was born in January 1941 in Kazakhstan in the town of Kustamej. At the time of the outbreak of WWII, the parents of Jerzy Diatlowicki lived in Warsaw from where they moved to Łuck, where his mother’s parents lived. In April 1940, the entire family was deported to the Soviet Union - the basis for the deportation was an accusation of sabotage on the Red Army entering Łuck.

The family ended up in Kazakhstan and initially worked at a sovkhoz. After the birth of Jerzy, his parents and grandparents moved to the nearby town of Kustamej, where Jerzy's grandfather took up work manufacturing official signs and established a monopoly for glazing work.

In 1946, the family of the Interviewee returned to Poland, at first finding accommodation in Szczecin, later moving to Warsaw. Jerzy Diatlowicki began his studies at the Medical University, the Philosophy Department and the Sociology Department at the Warsaw University. He was accused of an “irresponsible attitude towards the Military Training School”, and as a result he failed the subject and was expelled from the University. Jerzy Diatlowicki was then called up for military service. Later, he returned to university.

Jerzy Diatlowicki is a commentator and journalist; he has travelled to Israel on numerous occasions, also as a culinary correspondent.
