Do umarłej (To the Deceased) (II) – unpublished version

Siemaszko, Olga (1911-2000)

An unpublished version (draft) of the illustration to Władysław Broniewski's poem "Do umarłej" (To the Deceased), from the edition in the book "Ręka umarłej" (Hand of a Deceased), intended for spread pages (on the left, even page). A rather related version of this work that was printed in the book – also depicting funeral flowers for the late Maria Zarębińska-Broniewska – appears on page 126, under the poem. In the version selected for publication, the elements of the composition also include a stringless lute and a bisected string instrument.

The lines, presumably made in pencil, which are visible at the top of the design, inside the frame, signal the places intended to be filled in the composition of the book with the lines of the poem; the rectangle at the very top, under the top edge of this frame is the place for the title of the poem. In the design of this illustration, the outer edge of the frame marks the edges of the book page, the inner edge is the margins on the page where the text and the main part of the illustrative composition were supposed to fit in the composition of the book.
