Doorframe

A doorframe with a mezuzah hole was found on Olejna Street in Lublin.

Mezuzah (Hebrew" "doorpost") – a decorative case with a roll of parchment inside, on which are handwritten verses of the Torah, which are also fragments of the text of the daily prayer Shema Yisrael (Hebrew, "Hear, O Israel"). The mezuzah is attached to the right door frame, in its upper part (inclined at a certain angle), at the main entrance and at the doors leading to individual rooms in the Jewish house (also in the gates of tenement houses and homes). According to folk beliefs, mezuzahs were supposed to protect the house against misfortune and unclean forces (for more information, see Zofia Borzymińska, Rafał Żebrowski, mezuza; Mezuza, in: Polski Słownik Judaistyczny, Warsaw 2003, vol. 2, pp. 147–148).
