Entlausung – odwszenie (Entlausung – delousing) (march) – unpublished version (I)

Siemaszko, Olga (1911-2000)

One of the unused illustrations for the book "Ręka umarłej" (Hand of a Deceased), for the short story "Entlausung - odwszenie" (Entlausung – Delousing) by Maria Zarębińska-Broniewska. The story shows the march of female prisoners at Auschwitz to the bathhouse where they are to be deloused; in the final illustration used, they are depicted inside the building, while in this version they are outside: they are still walking into it or have already left it. By showing the women outside, the artist was able to introduce the leitmotifs of the project into the composition: the sun visible from behind the smoke and the fence of the concentration camp (the latter is not present in the final illustration used, and the first motif appears in a slightly altered form – as a lamp, see MPOLIN-M1612).

The outer edges of the painted frame of the illustration are uneven. This is due to the illustrator not having the need to ensure the closure of the outer elements of the composition, as the publisher's graphic designers were to handle its artistic processing.
