Erwin Axer, 1983

Gierałtowski, Krzysztof (1938- )

In 1997, Erwin Axer (1917–2012), director and creator of the splendour of the Współczesny Theatre in Warsaw, told the journalist of Kurier Polski: "I am satisfied with my life. It is great happiness if a person can do what he/she wants and be surrounded by colleagues whom he/she likes and appreciates. I also played tennis a lot in my life and was skiing for a while. What else can you wish for? "His student and successor, Maciej Englert, said of him: "He was a European. He had sophistication, manners, knowledge and class. It has found its place not only in the history of Polish theatre, but also the Viennese Burgtheater"(Jacek Cieślak, Europejczyk w teatrze (A European in the theatre), Rzeczpospolita of 7 August 2012).

Axer was a student of Leon Schiller. In 1939, he graduated from directing studies at the State Institute of Theatre Arts. After the war, from 1949 to 1981, he headed the Contemporary Theater in Warsaw. From texts written in the years 1978–2003, he composed the volumes Z pamięci (From memory) and Ćwiczenia pamięci (Exercises of memory), which, as it was written, created ``non-chronological history in episodes – the history of a century and life.`` Renata Piątkowska
