Evacuation

Jamiołkowska, Aleksandra (1993- )

A sign with the Russian word "office" holds the centre stage of the composition. In the background: military formations (e.g. a working battalion) transferring offices, factories, and so on, further into the territories of the USSR. The sign is nailed to a tree, which serves as a metonymy for the fact that the infrastructure is being moved to a completely unsuitable and unprepared area.

In the short film Syberyjski diament [Siberian Diamond] (2016), based on the videotaped oral history interview with Jerzy Diatłowicki (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgxK-5rEiRU), the image is intercut with the narration about the huge evacuations after 22 June 1941, specifically the words: "not only production plants, but also bureaus, offices and so on, and so on".
