Gottlieb, Leopold (1879-1934)

The soldier shown in profile on the left, with his head shaved, kneels in full gear on his right knee in prayer, probably over the grave of a comrade-in-arms in the cemetery in Wołczeck near Kostiuchnowka, which is not included in the picture. Clashes between the Legionnaires and the Russian army took place there already at the end of 1915. The lithograph fits iconographically into the legion's mortuary theme – connected with death in battle, expanded by Gottlieb in his portfolio with two other works. | AT
