Felicja Blumental's school card (I)

Jest częścią kolekcji

Identity card No. 19 issued with the name Fela Blumental by the eight-class Girls’ Philological Gymnasium run by Cecylia Goldman-Landau for the school year 1915/1916. We do not know what 8-year-old Fela looked like when she began her education in one of the best private schools in Warsaw: unfortunately, her identity card does not contain a photograph. The card bears legible, preserved signatures of the school’s superior Cecylia Goldman-Landau and the secretary Artur Landau. On the cover, there was an inscription embossed with gold letters, now faintly visible: 8th grade. GIMNAZJUM Filologiczne CECYLJI GOLDMAN-LANDAUOWEJ W WARSZAWIE [Cecylia Goldman-Landau’s Philological Gymnasium in Warsaw]. | The gymnasium was created out of a three-class girls’ school founded in 1853 by Julia Paprocka. In 1899, the school was taken over by Cecylia Goldman-Landau (who ran it until 1920). In 1907, it was transformed into a seven-class gymnasium and, in 1918, into an eight-class female gymnasium specialising in humanities. More information about the school can be found at: https://sztetl.org.pl/en/towns/w/18-warsaw/102-education-and-culture/138812-gimnazjum-i-liceum-cecylii-goldman-landauowej-w-warszawie | There was also a reminder: “The student is obliged to carry this card”, as it entitled her to discounted tram journeys on school days until 5 p.m., except on Sundays and holidays. | Renata Piątkowska
