Celnikier, Izaak (1923-2011)

The composition depicting naked Jewish women walking in the same direction, possibly being marched to a gas chamber, was built on the rhythm of round heads with terrified looks and legs outlined with oblique contour lines. In shaping the form of another of his visions of the Holocaust, Celnikier explicitly refers to German Expressionism, with its deformation of the human silhouette and heightened expression of the pain of an inhuman existence coming to an end. | AT
