Food

Jamiołkowska, Aleksandra (1993- )

The variety of food products which Józef Diatłowicki might have been receiving for his glassmaking services. A milk churn, bread, vegetables. At the bottom on the left an onion-like plant with three leaves of chives. On its right, what seems to be a bundle of radishes; more to the right – a dark squash. Near the bottom part of the churn, on its left, four eggs or potatoes (slightly outlined); also visible is a dark tomato by the upper edge in the centre, behind it, partially hidden behind the churn – a loaf of bread.

By the upper parts of the churn, traces of some previous drafts of its element (a handle?).

In the short film Syberyjski diament [Siberian Diamond], based on the oral history interview with Jerzy Diatłowicki videotaped in 2016 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgxK-5rEiRU), the image is intercut with the narration about the kinds of payment received by Józef for his glass cutting and frame making services – food, "or something, that could be easily exchanged for food. I remember, for example, a cart full of hay pulling down by the house – hay was sort of a hot merchandise, even though we wouldn’t eat hay".
