Fragment of a matzeva

A small fragment of a tomb stele (matzeva), in the form of a vertical, rectangular sandstone slab with a bas-relief inscription. The epitaph is partially preserved and basic information about the deceased can be read on it: Chaim Pesach, son of Israel Yaakov Rozenblatt, died on the 16th day of the month of Tevet in [5]680 (i.e. 1920).

The matzeva was found among the rubble in the vicinity of Łęczycka Street (ul. Łęczycka) in Łowicz, where a Jewish cemetery was established around 1829/1839, devastated by the Germans during World War II. At that time, matzevot were used, among other things, to fortify the embankments of the Bzura River. After the war, the remains of the tombstones were used as material for the construction of a monument to Polish-Soviet friendship, which was dismantled in 1991. In the early 1990s , the Jewish cemetery in Łowicz was partially reconstructed.
