The frames

Jamiołkowska, Aleksandra (1993- )

The depiction of little Jerzy Diatłowicki next to some picture frames with glass shields made by his grandfather, Józef. Eleven of them can be seen – of different shapes and sizes – hanging on the wall behind the boy (tow frames in the middle with visible hooks for nails attached to the upper edge). Squares, ovals, rectangles, circles. In the frames – random single letters, sometimes several, e.g. in the one in the upper right corner we read: "A" in its right upper corner, and "OPE8" by its left edge, near the half of its length (vertically, one letter under the other). Blending and pencil smudges can be seen in different parts of the composition, especially in the upper part on the left, near the head of the boy.

In the short film Syberyjski diament [Siberian Diamond] (2016) based on the videotaped oral history interview with Jerzy Diatłowicki (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgxK-5rEiRU), the image is intercut with the words about how grandpa decided that "a decent, wooden sign is necessary, one with a frame. And so he also took up making wooden frames. A comprehensive service. And so he monopolised, I guess, about a third of Kazakhstan [...]".
