"In the Full Armour"

Gottlieb, Leopold (1879-1934)

The image of a soldier in full dress uniform. In the case of this lithograph, the psychological characterisation of the figure becomes secondary in view of numerous soldierly props and details of his clothing, such as a rifle slung over his shoulder, an ammunition belt on his hip, a tankard on which the soldier supports his left hand, various panniers, a coat over his uniform, and a cap. | The place where the drawing was made, together with the date, included in the signature, indicate that the artist was in the so called Rojowy Osiedle hidden in the woods near Optowa at the time (May 1916), when the celebrations connected with the first anniversary of the formation of the 4th Infantry Regiment, with Józef Piłsudski's participation, took place there. We recognise Gottlieb in a group photograph, showing Brigadier Piłsudski and Colonel Roja meeting with goalkeepers after a football match near Optowa. | AT
