Geological Cross-Section I [Jedwabne]

Sobocki, Leszek (1934- )

It is part of the collection

Work from a series of assemblages created by Leszek Sobocki in search of a new form of expression to oppose human wickedness. The artist referred to the symbol of Jedwabne. He has presented the geological profile of the crime scene. As he himself admitted: 'I am trying to move to the space where evil happened, to recreate the place – the site, the light, the voices, the circumstances, the time – which means capturing the data that will help to partially create the event" (A. Bricken, 'Sobocki. Katalog wystawy', Kraków 2007, p. 25). Looking at the picture, we see an idyllic landscape, prevailing in the work, while the underground layer of sand hides objects symbolising the traces of the murder, glasses, a coin, keys or a cartridge shell.
