Girls from the Lelov Hasidic family, Stamford Hill, London

Traczewska, Agnieszka (1969-)

Hasidic Jews through the lens of Agnieszka Traczewska

The photograph of the two girl-children was taken in Stamford Hill, London – a district with a large Jewish community. Clustering Hasidic communities close together and concentrating them in a particular part of the city is one of the characteristics of this group. The Hasidim's separation from those outside their community allows them to protect their privacy, which is of the utmost importance to this community, as well as to limit as much as possible the infiltration of contemporary customs, behaviour or clothing considered undesirable and in conflict with their lifestyle. The need for privacy is particularly evident in women, who, according to the rules of this community, should be as invisible as possible. Neighbourhoods with Hasidic communities are also found in other countries, and it also happens that Hasidim live in separate towns.
