Grager

A wooden ratchet (Yiddish grager, Hebrew raashan) used by Jews during the Purim holiday. The joyous Purim holiday, known as the Jewish carnival, symbolises God's deliverance of the people of Israel from oppression and persecution. In commemoration of the miraculous rescue of the Jews in Persia, whose murder was planned by the evil Haman, the Book of Esther describing those events is read in synagogues. Every time the name "Haman" is pronounced, ratchets are sounded and rattles are waved to blot out his name.
