Great Mikveh in Kraków

Photographic documentation of the site

A mikveh probably existed in Kraków as early as at the turn of the 15th century. However, the first documentary mention of the existence of this institution, important for the Jewish community, dates back to 1567. Therefore, the building of the Jewish ritual bath is considered to have been constructed at 6 Szeroka Street shortly before 1567. It was mentioned a little later in the statute of the municipality of 1595 (next to the other one, which was located in the vicinity of the Nowy Square and now no longer exists). In the 17th century, it was known as the "Great mikveh". The mikveh continued to operate on the same site for centuries to come, and its building has been preserved to the present day.
