Hand washing cup

Cup with a thick profiled rim, narrowing towards the bottom. The bottom part has the form of a low socle with a wider ring-shaped part, slightly narrower above. On the side surface, there is an engraving in the form of a stylised stalk with a heart-shaped escutcheon; inside it, there is a Hebrew inscription in two lines: “Al mayim/ acharonim” – lit. “for after-waters”, which refers to washing one’s hands after finishing a meal. The stalk has big leaves and is topped with a flower facing left.

The item forms part of Anna Strońska’s collection of Judaica. After her death, the collection became fragmented. A small part of the holdings was purchased for the collection of the National Museum of Przemyśl in 2008, and some of the items went to POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
