Hasidic children in Westcliff

Traczewska, Agnieszka (1969-)

This photograph of children from Hasidic families was taken in the seaside town of Westcliff in the UK. Hasidic families most often have many children, as having children is a woman's vocation from the moment of marriage – it is understood as a blessing and a reward for women for their piety and observance of the precepts. The girls' photography is unique, due to the fact that Hasidic women are not usually photographed and their images are not published in magazines, for example. Only pictures of men and boys can be found in the Hasidic press – girls (usually only up to the age of six) make an exceptional appearance.
