Hasidic woman, Me'a She'arim, Jerusalem

Traczewska, Agnieszka (1969-)

The photograph shows a woman from a Hasidic family inside her flat in Mea Shearim, a neighbourhood of Jerusalem. The interior is modest, in line with the Hasidic way of life and the values they profess. In many homes, a portrait of family members who survived the Holocaust and photographs of representatives of successive generations occupy a place of honour, demonstrating how tradition, which is extremely important in this society, can be preserved thanks to the many children and the ties that are maintained. In the most orthodox families, no photographs are hung on the walls, apart from a portrait of the tzaddik, and sometimes there is no mirror.
