Hasidic woman praying at the Western Wall, Jerusalem

Traczewska, Agnieszka (1969-)

A young woman portrayed during prayer at the so-called Wailing Wall (Hebrew: Kotel ha-Maarawi, Western Wall), which is a probable remnant of a section of the outer wall of the Jerusalem Temple. This place is special to the Jews – hallowed by the presence of God in an immaterial form. Separate prayer areas have been organised at the Western Wall: A 12-metre space for women and a 48-metre space for men. Prayer and presence at the Western Wall are subject to rules, but only women are obliged to follow – they are not allowed to say prayers aloud, sing or read the Torah.
