Hasidic women during the Hachnosas Sefer Torah procession in Stamford Hill, London

Traczewska, Agnieszka (1969-)

A large group of women participating in the Hakhnosat Sefer Torah (Hebrew: הכנסת ספר תורה, Torah Greeting) held in the Stamford Hill area of London in line with the Hasidic principle of separating women and men during rituals and prayers follows a group of men. This ceremony is associated with the transfer of the Torah scrolls or the moving of the entire synagogue to another location. The escort of the Torah scroll originates from the procession of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, led by King David. Today's processions are accompanied by singing, playing musical instruments and dancing - in the likeness of the ceremonies recorded in the Book of Samuel.
