Hasidic women, Me'a She'arim, Jerusalem

Traczewska, Agnieszka (1969-)

The artist has captured in a photograph the moment when the women help each other to put on their headgear. In Hasidic circles, married women are obliged to cover their hair and the moment of marriage represents a symbolic severance from their previous lives. The women visible in the photograph are wearing headgear with fancy designs. Due to the modesty required of women from orthodox families, most women opt for dark and uniform headgear. Patterned scarves appear on festive or celebratory occasions and the level of attire is dictated by membership of a particular family and its rules. The women in the photograph are wearing long-sleeved jumpers and high-buttoned collars because, according to the modesty rule, they should not expose their arms above the wrists or show cleavage (covering the body below the collar line is mandatory).
