Hat Factory ink stamp

The collection of the Tykocin Museum contains an example of an ink stamp used in the production of headgear from the A. Goldberg Hat Factory in Węgrów. The image of the Warsaw Mermaid inscribed in the shape of the Star of David draws attention.

Shoemakers, tailors, haberdashers and hatmakers in inter-war Poland had to actively compete for customers. The society, impoverished during the First World War and the Great Depression of the late 1920s and early 1930s, had little surplus cash to spend on goods other than food. An important distinguishing feature of goods on the market, apart from the quality of the products, was the trademark, usually placed on the inner parts of clothing or footwear.
