he design of theatre scenography – the interior of a room

Pacanowski, Bolesław (1901-1977)

This one and the next (see MPOLIN-M1164) theatre scenography designs were most likely created for the Lower Silesian Jewish Theatre in Wrocław. For the performance Hamans mapole (Haman's Defeat) by Chaim Sloves, directed by Icchok Turkow-Grudberg, Bolesław Pacanowski prepared decorations and costumes. See the poster announcing the premiere of the play on 7 December 1949: http://luna.pwsz.legnica.edu.pl/integro/ici/search?q=Teatr+Comoedia+%28Warszawa+%3B+1945-1949%29&index=4&f7[0]=yid, accessed 8.11.2021.

Henri Chaim Sloves (Słowes; born 1905 in Białystok, died 1988 in Paris) was a writer, lawyer (he obtained his doctorate at the Sorbonne Université) and communist. He moved to Paris in 1926 and lived in France during World War II. Theatre has always been his passion. After the outbreak of war, he began writing the drama Hamans mapole. Published in Paris in 1949, it was staged in New York, Buenos Aires, Brussels and Wrocław. In later years, other plays by Sloves were performed at the Esther Rachela Kamińska State Jewish Theatre in Warsaw: Baruch z Amsterdamu (Baruch of Amsterdam), directed by Marian Melman (premiere 27 March 1961) and Dziesięciu było nas braci (Ten Were Us brothers...) directed by Ida Kamińska (the premiere on 19 April 1968.
