High Synagogue in Krakow

Photographic documentation of the site

The synagogue is housed in a brick, late Renaissance building built on a rectangular plan. It was probably built between 1556 and 1563. One hypothesis suggests that the synagogue was built by Sephardic Jews on the model of the synagogues erected in the Venetian ghetto. Whereas another version says that in the second half of the 16th century, a wealthy merchant, Izrael, applied to King Sigismund II Augustus for permission to erect a synagogue and allegedly received it. It is known that the synagogue appears as "New" in documents from 1597.
