Houses in Kazimierz Dolny

Rozental, Roman (1897-1942)

The painting from 1928 (pastel, paper, 29 x 41.5 cm) presents a street with buildings in Kazimierz Dolny. The street occupies the central part of the composition. The right side is dominated by the blocks of three houses constituting the main accent of the work. The left part is filled with an unspecified fragment of a wall of a building. The image is treated synthetically, with a strongly defined contour highlighting the forms. It is maintained in vivid colours, with a characteristic predominance of blue, red and yellow. There is a signature in the lower right corner: "R. Rozental 928/ Kazimierz".

Roman Rozental (1897–1942) – painter, theatre director, musician, a member of the artistic group "Start" and "Grupa Siedmiu". During World War II, he worked in the Warsaw Ghetto in a whetstone factory where many other artists of Jewish origin were employed.
