Interior of the Synagogue

Wojnarski, Jan (1879-1937)

The etching Interior of the Synagogue by Tarnów-born artist Jan Wojnarski depicts the interior of the Old Synagogue in Kraków. The central point of the composition enclosed in a vertical rectangle is an openwork, iron-wrought bimah topped with a ciborium. In front of it, there are two rows of benches, which extend beyond the lower edge of the image field. Through the gaps in the bimah structure, one can clearly see the column supporting the ribbed vault of the synagogue. The farthest background is the Aron ha-Kodesh (the sacred box in which the Torah scrolls are kept) located at the left edge of the image field. It is enclosed in a decorative architectural frame. No signature.
