Jerzy

Jamiołkowska, Aleksandra (1993- )

Imagined depiction of little Jerzy Diatłowicki on a Kazakhstan steppe.

Positioned straight ahead, he is looking in the viewer’s direction. He is wearing some bright coloured cap or turban, some kind of short skirt or trousers – white with sparse, short, dark dashes – and scratched white boots or bast shoes reaching his ankles. Surroundings: flat ground with scarce, dark, little clumps of grass in some spots. Visible clear horizon, the outlined shapes of buildings on the right. Blurs and pencil smudges are especially visible near the figure in the upper part of the drawing.

In the short film Syberyjski diament [Siberian Diamond] (2016), based on the videotaped oral history interview with Jerzy Diatłowicki (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgxK-5rEiRU), the image is intercut with narration describing the child’s discovery of his Jewishness, specifically with the words: "For me, it was obvious – I was Polish".
