Jerzy Kosiński, 1984

Gierałtowski, Krzysztof (1938- )

When, in 1984, Krzysztof Gierałtowski was taking this picture of Jerzy Kosinski (1933–1991) on the terrace of his apartment in New York, the writer was at the height of his fame and success. The author of many novels, incl. Steps (1968, Polish edition 1989) and Just be (1968, Polish edition 1990), he gained publicity primarily as the author of The Painted Bird. It is a story about war, cruelty and survival (1965, Polish edition 1989). Kosinski's biographer wrote about him: "‘There is no Pole, no Jew, no fish, no bird’, he perfectly captured the modus vivendi of all this work, and The Painted Bird especially – the very complex problem of Kosiński's search and abandonment of the tangled identity" (James Park Sloan, Jerzy Kosiński. Biografia (Jerzy Kosinski. Biography), Warsaw 1996).

Jerzy Kosiński committed suicide on 3 May 1991.
